Published in 1994 by mathematician Peter Shor, this quantum algorithm can solve both integer factorization and discrete logarithm problems in polynomial time.

  • RSA-2048: fewer than 1 million noisy qubits, under one week of runtime (Gidney, May 2025) — revised down from the 2019 estimate of 20 million qubits and 8 hours. Classically it would take billions of years.
  • ECDSA secp256k1 (Bitcoin, Ethereum wallets): the cheaper target, and the one that matters here. Google Quantum AI, with the Ethereum Foundation and Stanford, compiled it down to 1,200 to 1,450 logical qubits inside fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, cracked in minutes (March 2026). An independent Caltech and Oratomic analysis put it at roughly 26,000 physical qubits on neutral-atom hardware over about 10 days. Earlier estimates said roughly 2,330 logical qubits; the number keeps falling.
  • Hash functions are the exception. Grover's algorithm only halves the security margin of SHA-256, which is why hash-based signature schemes survive the quantum age and elliptic curves do not.

Read that middle bullet again. Bitcoin is not protected by RSA-scale cost. Bitcoin is the discount item. Fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, and it resolves fast enough in principle to steal a transaction out of the mempool before it confirms.

Every single "secure" primitive that was once considered good enough has been broken. There are quantum encryption systems that have been developed by mathematicians and given the stamp of approval by NIST already that require lattice mathematics, such as Kyber, Dilithium, and SPHINCS+ signatures. Yeah, crazy nerdy names, but it is true, and it shows the times we are in.

The Speed of Technological Collapse

For those of you scoffers: look at how fast AI has moved since 2020. We now have Claude Code and Kimi 2.5 (1TB parameters) and competing coding models able to code browsers, operating systems, and much more. This is just what is available to consumers. The Fork Myth: "Bitcoin Can Just Update"

People keep saying: "Bitcoin can just fork and become quantum-safe."
